ANNUAL JACK MORTLAND RACEWALKS
Sunday,
May 15th, 2005
New course records, as well as first time champions, were the news at
this morning's 18th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks. Held on a
new, 1.25 kilometer course at beautiful Eastwood Park in Dayton, Ohio,
and hosted by the greater metropolitan area's Miami Valley Track Club,
the featured 20 kilometer event was also the USA Track & Field's
North Region and Ohio Championships.
Taking home the first place prize money of $100 each were the duo of
Loretta Schuellein, of Long Island New York's Walk USA Track Club and
the Indiana Racewalkers' Max Walker. For Schuellein first was
worth more than the cash. The real payoff was a new PR for 20K
and a qualifying time for the USATF National 20K Championships in
Carson City, California, at the end of June. Showing some new
speed Loretta turned her first 5k in 25:35 and 10K in 52:06 before a
once gentle cross wind turned into a stiff head wind during the second
half of the race.
Walkers' victory was hard fought as both Leon Jasionowski and Ed Fitch
gave chase. But after a first 10k in 54:40 Max was able to break
open a small gap which widened very gradually to the
finish. Deb Topham, a former winner of the Jack Mortland
20K finished 2nd for the women over Gayle Johnson of Columbia, Missouri.
Unlike the 20k race the 5k men's race was undecided until the final
stretch sprint. Dave Reed had the better last lap as he surged
away from fellow Pegasus teammate Rod Craig to win the shorter event by
16 seconds. Christiana Peters, of the host club, was the easy
women's winner in 28:12. With some youth in the women's race 21
year old Billie Robinson, second at the NAIA Indoor Nationals back in
March edged out 22 year old Theresa Amerman of the Indiana
Racewalkers. Fourteen year old Danielle Doubt, a teammate of
Tina's both at Yellow Springs HS and with the Miami Valley Track Club,
enjoyed a 3 minute PR at 5k to take fourth for the women in 32:23.
The Pegasus Walkers won the team competition for the fifth year in a
row with the 1-2 finish in the 5k enjoined with Jasionowski's 20k
time. The Indiana Walkers were second with the Miami Valley TC
third and the Great Lakes Organization of Walkers (GLOW) fourth.
The winning team took home $150 dollars to reward their combined
efforts plus the traveling Trophy symbolizing the best team in the
North Region of USATF.
