19th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks

Miami Valley TC Athlete Wins HS T&F Nationals

Congradulations to Tina Peters, winner of the National High School Indoor T&F Championship in the Race Walk.  Peters won both the Nike Indoor Invitational (NIN) in Townsend, Maryland, and the National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC) in New York City on back-to-back days.  She won the NIN in an outstanding time of 7:25 for the one mile walk with a 7:36 good enough for the NSIC victory. Peters was also recognized as an Academic All American.  Peters is a senior at Yellow Springs HS and has accepted a Track & Field Scholaship to Goshen College in Indiana.  She will continue her career in race walking with an eye on the 2008 Olympic Trials while also studying Physics.

2004
Jack Mortland Racewalks
Story:

Matt Boyles and Lisa Sontag were the winners earlier today, Sunday,
May 9th, of the 17th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks, held in
Yellow Springs, Ohio. Hosted by the Dayton area's Miami Valley
Track Club, the featured 20 kilometer event was also the USA Track
& Field's North Region and Ohio Championships.

Boyles, from Tupper Plains, Ohio, took both crowns as he won the
Mortland 20K title for the third straight year! A senior at Rio
Grande University in Southeastern Ohio, and defending NAIA National
Champion in the walks, the 21 year old had a large winning margin
at the end, but it wasn't an easy victory.

After an 8:59 opening 2k lap he settled into a steady pace, hitting
10 kilometers in 45:20. Still on pace for a low 1:30, the heat &
humidity became a factor after 16 kilometers. Conserving effort to
avoid dehydration Boyles cruised in to the finish with a 1:32:08.
Despite the early 8am start, temperatures reached a very hot mid
70s by race end.

Mark Green, from Las Vegas, Nevada, in town for Mother's Day,
finished in 1:39.00. Rod Craig, from Bad Ax, Michigan was third
in 1 hour 52 minutes and 12 seconds.

Unlike the men's race the women's race was undecided until the
final stretch sprint. Sontag, from Orlando, Florida, and runner-up
Marcia Gutsche-Rutledge, from Newton, Massachusetts, battled side
by side for nearly the entire 20 kilometers. Sontag's ability to
both dig deep and increase her tempo garnered a six second victory
in 1:53:27.

Sontag, who flew into Dayton just for today's walks, was
disappointed despite having the 1st place prize money check in hand
. The weather was too much like home in Florida and left both
women with a time well off the Olympic Trials qualifying standard
of 1 hour and 48 minutes. Gutsche-Rutledge posted a 1:53:33.

Winning the day's other events were Leon Jasionowski, of Shelby
Township, Michigan, and Tina Peters of Yellow Springs in the 10K
walk. Bill Reed of Scotts, Michigan, won the men's 5K
competition, with Billie Robinson, of Rio Grande University and
Lakeview, Ohio, taking the women's division. The team title was
won by the Pegasus Track Club of Michigan with the host team, the
Miami Valley Track Club, finishing second.

16th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks

16th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks
Sunday, April 13th, 2003
Yellow Springs HS, Yellow Springs, Ohio

Boyles Repeats - Pegasus Three-peats

Rio Grande University junior Matt Boyles repeated as USA
Track & Field North Region Champion when he won the 16th
annual Jack Mortland racewalks yesterday in Yellow
Springs. The 2003 NAIA National Indoor Track & Field
Champion in the 3,000 meter racewalk, the Ohio native
from Tupper Plains conquered the Olympic distance of 20
kilometers by walking the course in 1 hour 31 minutes and
33.9 seconds. By averaging nearly 7:22 per mile Boyles
joined the select few who have already qualified for the
2004 Olympic Trials in Track & Field. That standard is
1 hour and 36 minutes.

Boyles, who got stronger as the race wore on, had one bad
lap over the fast 2K out and back course. He walked to
the halfway mark (6.2 miles) in 46:25, and then sprinted
home in 45:08.

"My shins got sore at the beginning but after 4K stopped
bothering me," he said.

Joining him in victory on the woman's side was West
Virginia's top walker, Bobbie Jo Chapman. The 29 year
old from Charleston also made the 2004 Olympic trials
qualifying standard. Needing to beat 1 hour and 48
minutes, she qualified by topping the field with a
1:44:20.

Finishing second overall to Boyles was Rio Grande
teammate Jim Robinson. It was his first 20K and he was
happy with the time 1:38:27. 2001 Champion, and last
year's runner-up, 45 year old Rod Craig was third.
Former Olympian Gary Morgan placed 4th.

On the women's side Michigan's Deb Topham and Lynnette
Heinlein finished second and third, respectively, in the
20K walk.

Six USATF member clubs competed for the team title at
this year's Championships. Five finished. Winning the
Traveling Trophy for the third straight year, with a
total time of 3 hours 3 minutes and 16 seconds, was the
Pegasus Walking Club from Michigan. The host team, the
Miami Valley Track Club of Yellow Springs, was second.
The Indiana Racewalkers finished third.

"Rod Craig, from Bad Axe, Michigan, had his best time
ever on our course", said Miami Valley Track Club coach,
and race director, Vince Peters. "Combined with the
winners of the 10 and 5 kilometer races, Bill Reed, and
Leon Jasionowski the Pegasus squad had too much speed
for us."

While Michigan athletes took the men's titles in both
the 5K and 10K walks, Indiana and Ohio split the 5K and
10K titles for the women. Winning the 5K for the women
was Yellow Springs High School 9th grader Tina Peters,
with a time of 27:59. Indiana Racewalking Club's Cathy
Mayfield was victorious in the 10K. Runner-ups at the 5
and 10 were Billie Robinson, a frosh at Rio Grande in
the five, and Cincinnati Walking Club's Miriam Jacobs in
the 10K.

The 20K also served as the USA Track & Field's Ohio
Association 20 Kilometer Racewalk Championships. Boyles
won that title with Robinson 2nd and Chris Knotts 3rd.
No Ohio woman finished the distance for the 2nd year in
a row.

2nd Annual Wilmington College Racewalks

2nd Annual Wilmington College Racewalks
5 April 2003

FAST TIMES ON A COLD DAY

Cool weather, 42 degrees, and a freezing breeze suited
the Personal Best efforts of several walkers at today's
2nd Annual Wilmington Invitational Racewalks.

The Women's race was a 3 way dual with two frosh and a
Senior mixing it up. And all three would break Cheryl
Rellinger's meet record of 15:59. At the end of a 1:59
last lap it was Yellow Springs HS frosh, Tina Peters,
with the victory. Her PB time was 15:41.92 (FAT).
Katie Rulapaugh, a Cedarville University senior was
second for the second straight year. She posted her
fastest ever collegiate outdoor time with a 15:45.00.
Third went to first year walker from Rio Grande, Billie
Robinson. The college frosh posted a 45 second PB of
15:50.28.

In the Men's race Matt Boyles broke away from teammate
Jim Robinson after 3 laps to win in 11:58.03, 5 seconds
off the meet record he posted last year. Robinson's
second place time was 12:43.26. The third of the Rio
Grande athletes, Tim Sykes, finished third in a PB
14:39.44. Sykes only started racing walking last
December.

Within a half hour of completing his walk, Sykes,
another of those strange Racewalking Steeplechasers
(ala Jill Zenner-Cobb), stepped to the starting line of
the iceberg filled water jump race for another fun
filled 3K encounter.

Robinson, who had posted a 12:48 earlier this season,

easily won the women’s race. This year’s Ohio Indoor

Mansfield University's walkers put in a 9 hour drive to get
to the University of Findlay in northwestern hinterlands of
Ohio on Friday. Rio Grande put in 4 traveling from the far
southeastern corner of Ohio. Normally this kind of travel
would negatively affect an athlete's performance but only
Gary Morgan's meet and field house records suffered -
terminal erasure!

Smith also took advantage of the near perfect weather
to complete a full 20K walk. For Smith it was his
first 20K. Despite the hills Smith walked a 1:45:59.
Peters, who had to stop and stretch out a knotted
hamstring, finished in 1:52:36.

15th Annual Jack Mortland Racewalks

Sunday, April 21st, 2002
Yellow Springs HS, Yellow Springs, Ohio

hosted by
MIAMI VALLEY TRACK CLUB

I feel a bit like famed beagle Snoppy, sitting and typing,
"It was a dark and stormy ...". Only it wasn't night.
The day dawned rather dreary, at 40 degrees with a steady
rain. Then the wind, out of the north and directly down
the 2nd kilometer of each lap, picked up, and it became
bone chilling cold for the 15th Annual Jack Mortland
Racewalks. Held in honor of Olympian and famed editor of
the world renowned monthly publication Ohio Walker
Magazine, this year's race tested the mettle of athlete,
judge, and volunteer worker.

All, except, perhaps, debut 20K walker, Matt Boyles from
Tuppers Plains, Ohio. Still 19 and a sophomore at Rio
Grande University in southeastern, Ohio, Matt took charge
right from the gun and never looked back. The new North
Region USATF & Ohio Association 20K Champion warmed up, so
to speak, with a first 4K in a tic under 19 minutes. Then
he hit cruise control and averaged 4:29 per K for the last
16 kilometers. His first 10K passed in 45:59 and the
second, in a heady negative split of 44:27. Rod Craig,
from Bad Axe, Michigan, last year's winner with a 1:46:04,
improved in '02, despite the weather, to post a runner up
finish in 1:45:43. He was even more estatic when he found
out the young college athlete couldn't take home the prize
money and the winner's pot of $100 was all his. Max
Walker, from the Indiana Walkers was third in 1:53:04.

A small women's field of four toed the line with the 10
men. They faced the same adversities as the men, and
Debbie Topham, of Mayville, Michigan, weathered the storm
best. The 49 year old USATF 20K North Region Champion
took home both the trophy and the $100 1st place prize
money. Lynette Heinlein of the Great Lakes Organization
of Walkers (GLOW) was second. Two seconds later Janet
Higbie of the Indiana Walkers finished third. Not hiding
within the anonymity of her married name, Jill Cobb,
formerly Zenner, of New Balance's professional race walk
team, was a notable DNF.

In the shorter races, Bill Reed, of the Kalamazoo Valley
Walkers, Michigan was able to finagle a narrow advantage
over tenacious Ed Fitch of the home standing Miami Valley
Track Club. That lead was enough to hold onto over the
final 2K for a victory in 57:32. John Fisher of the
Cincinnati Walkers was third. Miriam Jackobs of the
Cincinnati Walkers won the women's tittle at 10K.

The 5K race went to Katie Rulapaugh of Cedarville
University, and Kenneth Lampar of Michigan's Pegasus
Walkers. For Lampar it was an easy victory with
Cincinnati Walkers' David Kreimer narrowly ahead of
teammate Ralph Dehner. The women's 5K was a dual
between Rulapaugh & Sara Sheets with the collegian
revenging a loss in Sheets' hometown of Cincinnati
just a month ago. Fourteen years old Tina Peters,
walking in her 7th Jack Mortland 5K, was 3rd.
Peters was on orders from her coach just to use it
as a training walk as she had set her junior high's
mile run record the day before. She'll make her debut
at the Penn Relays this Saturday.

A big thanks to everyone that helped, especially the judges
who were out there in the rain longer than any of the
athletes: Cheryl Sunman, Phil Dant, Dr. Alan Rice, Colleen
Dalton, and Vince Peters. Timers were Jan Smith and Jack
Mortland. Lap counters were an able group of young women
from Cedarville University and Yellow Springs HS. And meet
administration was able handled by Jennifer Peters with
help from Katie Rulapaugh, Tina Peters, and Ed Fitch.
The wild man in the rainstorm picking up red cards was
none other than 12 year old Andy Peters.

As usual the Saturday evening pasta dinner, and
refreshments after the race, allowed everyone to
share tales and renew old friendships. Thanks
for coming. Vince Peters - Race Director

WILMINGTON COLLEGE INVITATIONAL RACEWALK

Saturday, April 6th, 2002
Wilmington, Ohio

Weather 34 degrees with an inch of snow every where but on
the track. The women's race was superbly paced by former
Miami Valley TC standout Cheryl Rellinger. In town for
former house-mate Jill Zenner's wedding, Cheryl leapt out
to the lead at the starter's pistol. Challenged over the
last 100m by collegian Katie Rulapuagh, she won with a lean
at the line. Eighth Grader Tina Peters, of the Miami
Valley TC, stuck with the lead duo till the last lap to
narrowly miss the Junior National qualifying standard,
posting a 32 second personal best. Kristen Barnett, Rio
Grande, and Jenni Gerber, Cedarville, both recorded personal
bests.
