19th Annual Miami Valley Open Track & Field Meet
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
Yellow Springs HS Track, Yellow Springs, Ohio
~~ ~~
The 19th Annual Miami Valley Open T&F Meet was referred to as Eugene East last night by a visiting spectator when several stars highlighted the competition. And like the fabled meet held in that eclectic Oregon town, the fans in the stands at our humble stadium were thrilled by some huge throws and some exciting races on the track by some spectacular athletes.
Within minutes of the commencement of competition in the field events at 5:30pm, Air Force Captain Dave Dierecks established a new record in the javelin. Hurled expertly by Dierecks that slender aluminum spear soared in an artistic arcing rainbow that did not land for an incredible 229 feet and 11 inches! This was followed up within the next half hour by a real “wow” of a toss in the open men’s discus throw. Establishing a new record in that event, former University of Louisville hurler James Dennis whirled thrice ‘round the concrete pad. Then he released all the pent up energy from his muscular frame into the spinning disc that floated across the green field beyond to land a winning 190 feet and 2 inches away!
But there was still plenty of excitement to be had, including the always entertaining marathon dash of uncommonly cute two, three and four year olds in the first event of the track program. The quick fright of the starting gun’s blast only endears the tots to the crowd. The loud cheers, and the encouraging shouts of ribbon bearing HS girls at the finish line, hurry the future Olympians down the vast length of the track. And a mere 100 meters later to you and I, and these tykes are beaming as their tiny hands grasp the prized ribbon.
Track and field serves not only the youth. At the opposite end of the spectrum was 75 year old Robert Vickers who journeyed all the way down from Cleveland to compete in the meet. And by all reports he had a wonderful time, running the metric mile in an outstanding time of 8 minutes and 29 seconds.
But to be compared to Eugene, the pretender must have its own home town heroes of renown. And Yellow Springs does in the likes of Sam Borchers and Jake Gunderkline. And they did not disappoint. Gunderkline, headed to Goshen College in the fall on a track & field scholarship dominated the walks, handedly winning both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter race walks. And Borchers, the Penn State star, held off all challengers in a 5,000m run that featured several collegiate star s.
Next year’s meet, the 20th renewal of the Miami Valley Open, will take place on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010.
