Jack Mortland Race Walks

Eastwood Lake Park
Dayton, Ohio
Twenty five walkers gathered together from three
states for
this morning's Jack Mortland Race Walks. The annual race is held
in honor
of Ohio's 1964 Olympic Race Walker Jack Mortland. Jack is also
editor and
publisher of the Ohio Walker Magazine. The featured 20 kilometer
event
also served as the USATF North Region Championships and a qualifying
race for
the USA Nationals in downtown Indianapolis in June.
Twenty two year old Mike Tarantino, a recent
graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Parkside program, was the
men's winner in the near
perfect weather on the 1.25 kilometer course along the beautiful shores
of Eastwood Lake in Dayton. Tarantino's winning time of 1:33:34
for the 12.4 mile long race qualified him for June's USATF National
T&F Championships in Indianapolis and selection to the USA's
collegiate all-star T&F squad
that will be competing in the North American, Central American &
Caribbean
Islands Championships in July.
Susan Randall, of the host Miami Valley Track
Club
(MVTC), was the women's winner in 1:55:45. The 31 year old
Beavercreek, Ohio, resident has been competitive race walking for less
than 12
months. Brad Sinick, a junior at Malone College in Canton,
Ohio,
was second overall for the men. This was his initial effort at
the
Olympic distance. As a college walker he is used to the 3k and 5k
distances. Defending champ Max Walker of the Indiana Racewalkers
was
third. Debbie Topman of Michigan's Pegasus Track Club was
second
for the women.
The winner's of the 20k races received prize
money
awards of $100 each.
In the ten kilometer race Miami Valley
Teammates Ed
Fitch (Mechanicsburg,) and Tina Peters (Yellow Springs) were the
victors. Peters had won the 800m walk at her high school's
T&F
meet in 3:28 on Friday night, then had prom on Saturday night before
walking on
Sunday morning.
In the 5k race USA National Team member Matt
Boyles,
of the Miami Valley Track Club, was the easy winner. Boyles, 23,
from Xenia,
walked the 3.1 mile distance in 21:44. An All-American in the
5,000 meter
run in college Boyles will be taking his walking skills to Spain on
Tuesday for
