19^th Annual John Bryan Invitational

Every year, till this year, Yellow Springs has been perfect hosts.   Parents, teachers, alumni, friends, and even the athletes themselves, have helped make this event one of the best orchestrated competitions in the Miami Valley. Often in spite of whatever nasty weather Mother Nature choose to dispense.  And this year was no different.  Till the host Bulldogs won!

Over the prior 18 years the Bulldogs have had individual winners, set meet and school records (David Johnston – 15:45 in 1991), and finished 2^nd as a team - twice, but never has a Yellow Springs’ squad won an outright title at the John Bryan Invitational.  Initially conceived as a women’s only meet, it came into existence when there wasn’t even a District meet for the women.  They all advanced directly to the regional championships after having 2, or more, weeks without a meet. The following year it expanded to include the men and both junior high races.

And now the Bulldogs are no longer the perfect hosts – they have won their own invitational!  In an overwhelming fashion as they totaled just 36 points.  The key was the disciplined running of the B team, normally the varsity.  Since the interval workout planned for Monday was rained out, the athletes come back on Tuesday for a tempo run.  And what a tempo run it was – Five Bulldogs finished in the top 13, with sophomore sensation Sam Borchers winning in 16:39. This was a very respectable time and earned Borchers a spot in the Dayton Daily News’ Varsity section as its Male XC Athlete of the Week.    Last year’s winner, Xenia’s Michael Grundy, was ninth.

In the women’s race Alter topped its Dayton area division II rival, Bellbrook, 47 to 59 behind the running of 5^th place finishing Susan Hess.  Individually, Sarah Matthews of Xenia HS, and a Junior Olympics ALL-American Cross Country runner, advanced from second in 2003 to claim the 2004 crown with a 19:48 clocking.  Her victory earned her the Dayton Daily News’ Female XC athlete of the week honors!

In the Junior High races extremely close competitions among the teams was mirrored by the individual sprints to the finish.  In the Junior high boys’ race Gabe Weiss of Carroll out-leaned Ben Jones of Northwestern 11:34 to 11:35 at the line  Carroll helped by Weiss’ victory placed second to London.  Northwestern, lead by Hilary Grace’s second place finish in the junior high girls’ race, edged out Milton Union for the team title by one point, 63 to 64. Angela Kimklowski was the run-away individual champion with a 12:44 for the two mile course.
